Sculpture Contour

Again, I dont know what the picture was of that I drew. It was a sculpture made in what looked like marble... but thats all I know, lol.

In my Advanced Drawing critique I noticed that EVERYBODY had been doing drawings with a whole bunch of value, including myself. Soooo I decided for my next drawing, this drawing, to do an intense contour and see if I could get something I liked.

I like it.

"I find the image to be absolutely mesmerizing, as the power innate in the figure is so well expressed. The attention to detail and just the deep understanding of the human form needed to depict, in his words, an 'intense contour study' is mind-boggling." Fuck, that's awesome! Really good draftsmanship with a keen understanding of anatomy. Carry on Da Vinci!

Ive seen that in person. Its in Achilles Palace in Corfu Greece

heres a picture of it
[link]

The palace is at the top of a mountain. You take some VERY NARROW winding roads up to the palace. The statue itself is in the back garden, and it is overlooking the valley with the town below, towering cyprus trees peeking between the architecture below. Right beside it, is a huge (probably like 50 foot tall) statue of achilles. Its really impressive too!

this is a sculpture in greece of Achilles. You can just type in "achilles statue" into google and it'll pop up. A great rendition of it!

Are the grid lines from your comparative measuring off of a photograph, or are you using some fancy technique I have yet to learn?
Reply
:iconnapoleoman:
lol, hardly fancy. At UCF, where I was taught it, they call it an intercross. In reality, its just physical lines put down in order to visualize relationships in a figure. So if the toes are as far to the right as the elbow, then make a quick line showing it so you can reference it later.

Ah, I thought that that was it. I was taught that in junior high, and am starting to use it more and more now as I realize its effectiveness.
Thank you.
